Connor is a former AAI AmeriCorps member, now an AAI Board Treasurer. He grew up in Oregon and served with us in Alamosa in 2021, then served a second term in Salida in 2022. Connor currently works where he served at the Salida Montessori Charter School (you can read his bio on the Our Team page). As a former member, we asked Connor some questions about his experience then versus now as a board member. See what he had to say below!
My friend, who also served with AmeriCorps though in a different program, had interviewed with AAI. He ended up selecting a term of service that started earlier in the year, but reached out to me to let me know that he thought AAI would be a good fit for me. I had been interested in coming out to Colorado, had a teaching background, and wanted to be in a more rural setting. AAI both fit all those perks, while offering a lot of support in helping members in the transition (providing housing, roommates, training, support structures, etc.). I highlight these because many AmeriCorps programs don’t offer all these supports. Having them helped me take the risk to uproot my life and move to a new state.
As a member, I was quite tuned into the AmeriCorps and service side of things. Becoming a board member, I found out just how many programs, charities, and community groups that Megan has developed relationships with and supports in some capacity. She does a lot of hard work to try to address any and every need she sees in our communities.
Not significantly. It is useful to understand some of the behind the scenes decisions. I was more impressed with the scope of what Megan was accomplishing.
I volunteered to join the Board of Directors because I liked what AAI was doing and how it was doing it, and I was ready to get back into serving my community. I’m still on the Board of Directors after many years because I really believe in everything that AAI has achieved and I’m excited about what it will achieve in the future.
I have mentioned it already, but AAI has wonderful staff. They are the ones that make everything happen!!!
