On September 25th, multiple organizations with a shared commitment to the youth of the San Luis Valley met to discuss an action plan for the future. The San Luis Valley Youth Coalition meeting included the Boys and Girls Club, and Communities among others.
Our Focus
The organizations created the Youth Coalition to collaborate and break barriers in the valley. There are needs in the community that each organization is trying to address. They have found working together to be easier. These organizations support many different aspects of youth’s lives. This includes education, social justice initiatives, out-of-school programming, mentorship and outdoor leadership programs. They strive to provide youth voices with a forum and avenue to effect change in their communities.
Youth Needs
Rural Colorado’s K-12 education faces under-resourcing and strain. Out-of-school organizations play a critical role in supporting youth. Youth priorities identified in the SLV Youth Voices Forum included ensuring every child has a safe space. The coalition emphasized the need for individualized support. Students may need guidance for obtaining trade certificates or college support, for example. The Coalition recognizes the importance of gathering input from youth. This input helps identify specific community priorities from their perspective.
Out-of-school programs are essential for youth. They provide safe spaces for youth to go between school and home. Organizations like the High Valley Community Center and Alpine Achievers Initiative offer academic help and STEM education. Despite this, more support is still required.
Progress Made
Attendees mapped out community assets, identifying gaps in services. Many great organizations are active in the San Luis Valley. Unfortunately, the expansive area creates transportation barriers for many. Other challenges include stigmas surrounding mental health support, including decreased LGBTQ+ support for youth and families. Organizations are addressing this issue by hosting an SLV Pride night in Alamosa. The event will take place at the Narrow Gauge Newsstand on October 16th at 6 PM.
The Youth Coalition is working on a collaborative grant proposal to create future programs for kids. Together, we can create positive change!
